Can AI Safely Plan a Hike? What the Mount Shasta Rescue Teaches Us

AI can help you research a hike. It should not make the final decisions for you.
That distinction matters because a good-looking plan can still be wrong, incomplete, or built around assumptions that stop matching reality. Once you leave the trailhead, your skills, experience, judgment, and awareness have to stay switched on.
In late August 2026, three novice climbers had to be rescued after becoming stranded during a Mount Shasta climb. According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office account reported by ABC News, the group told authorities that they had relied heavily on Google Gemini for route information and recommendations about what to pack.
The incident is a useful warning, but not because AI was the only thing that went wrong. The deeper lesson is what happened when a plan met the real world.
What happened on Mount Shasta?
The three climbers established a camp around 8,400 feet and began their summit attempt at 3 a.m. They reportedly prepared for an eight-hour ascent. Instead, they reached the summit around 7 p.m.—approximately 16 hours after starting and seven hours beyond the recommended noon turnaround time.
They began descending in darkness. Their primary navigation phone died, the backup battery failed, and they wandered off the Clear Creek Route into Mud Creek Canyon. One climber injured his knee. The group then had to spend an unplanned night exposed on the mountain without enough food, water, warm clothing, or emergency shelter for the situation.
Forest Service climbing rangers reached them the following morning. High winds prevented a helicopter extraction, so the climbers and rescuers had to continue down on foot. All three eventually returned safely.
The climbers later acknowledged that they had relied too much on AI instead of their own critical thinking. That admission matters. So does everything that happened after the original plan began falling apart.
Did AI cause the rescue?
It contributed to the planning failure, but blaming the entire incident on AI would let the human decisions off too easily.
The climb was taking much longer than expected. The group passed the recommended turnaround time. Other climbers reportedly warned them to turn back. They were not feeling well. Daylight was disappearing. Each of those was new information from the real world, and each should have carried more weight than the plan created before the climb.
This is where “summit fever” becomes dangerous. Reaching the goal starts to feel more important than recognizing what the trip is telling you. The plan may say you can finish. The mountain may be telling you otherwise.
The current Mount Shasta Avalanche Center climbing advisory makes the distinction clear: there is no marked or sanctioned trail to the summit. Lines on a map represent suggested routes, while actual route-finding decisions must be made in the field using current conditions, skill, and judgment. The advisory also tells climbers to establish a noon turnaround time, carry proper navigation tools, monitor weather, and prepare for an unexpected night outside.
AI did not feel the hours passing. It did not see the condition of the climbers, watch the daylight disappear, or stand at the decision point with them. Those decisions still belonged to the people on the mountain.
What can AI do well?
AI can be a great research tool. It can help you identify possible routes, organize questions, compare equipment categories, locate official resources, and think through problems you might otherwise overlook.
But research is not the same thing as experience.
Even Google’s own guidance about Gemini responses says the system may produce inaccurate information and can present inaccurate information as factual. That does not make the tool useless. It means the user still has to verify important claims—especially when bad information could affect health or safety.
Use AI to help you ask better questions. Then confirm the answers with the land manager, ranger station, current weather service, official map, and people who understand the route. If the information cannot be verified, do not treat a confident-sounding answer as field guidance.
Why can’t AI understand your physical limits?
AI has no lived experience in the human body. It has never felt its legs weaken at altitude, struggled to think clearly from dehydration, or watched daylight disappear while still miles from the trailhead. Even if AI eventually operates more directly in the physical world, it will not have the same limitations as the person carrying the pack.
The truth is that two people do not experience the same conditions exactly the same way.
I learned that during my deployments. In Afghanistan, the cold rarely affected me the way it affected some of the other guys in my unit. I was comfortable being cold and seldom needed my heavy jacket until nighttime. Other members of the unit handled the cold differently. They needed more cold-weather gear, and they needed to use it sooner.
As a leader, I had to recognize that. My tolerance could not become the standard for everyone else.
Then Iraq taught me the other side of that lesson. The heat hit me hard—just as hard as the cold had hit some of the soldiers in my unit in Afghanistan. We were operating in the same environment, but our bodies did not experience it the same way.
Even identical twins on the same outdoor adventure can experience different levels of fatigue, pain, dehydration, confidence, and tolerance for heat, cold, or altitude. No AI-generated plan can account perfectly for that. Neither can a generic packing list.
What should replace blind trust in the plan?
Nothing replaces it because blind trust should never have been part of the plan.
Start with verified information. Build a realistic timeline. Establish a turnaround point before emotion and fatigue enter the decision. Carry navigation that does not depend entirely on one phone or one battery. Leave a complete trip plan with someone who knows when you should return. Then keep evaluating. Is the route matching the map? Is the weather changing? Is someone slowing down or becoming confused? Are you consuming water faster than planned? Can the whole group return before dark? Has the cost of continuing become greater than the value of reaching the goal?
Your plan should help you make those decisions. It should never trap you inside an assumption that has already failed.
Where does equipment fit?
Equipment carries and supports the plan. It does not make the decisions.
A dependable pack can hold water, food, navigation, lighting, insulating layers, first-aid supplies, communication equipment, and an emergency shelter. But it cannot tell you when someone is becoming dangerously cold. A GPS can show a position, but it cannot guarantee that the line on the screen is a safe route. A battery bank can provide another layer of power, but it is not a replacement for navigation skills or a paper map.
This is also why the right load depends on the people, terrain, weather, distance, and consequences of delay. A routine state-park day hike and a Mount Shasta summit attempt are not the same mission. Do not let the word “daypack” convince you that an unexpected night is impossible.
What is the real lesson?
The lesson is not to stop using AI. We use AI because it can make research faster and help us examine a problem from more than one direction.
The lesson is to keep your skills turned on.
The moment the conditions stop matching the plan, stop following the plan blindly. Observe what is happening. Listen to your body. Watch the people with you. Verify your location. Respect the turnaround time. Be willing to go home without completing the objective.
AI can help with the research. Your skills, experience, and judgment still have to make the decisions.
Ounces equal pounds. Pounds equal fatigue. Skills weigh nothing. Remember to use them.
