Is Your Backpack Waterproof or Water-Resistant? What the Labels Really Mean

A backpack can be made from water-repellent fabric and still allow water through its seams, zippers, openings, or attachment points. Unless the complete pack has been tested under clearly stated conditions, it is safer to treat a conventional sewn backpack as water-resistant—not waterproof.

That distinction matters. A brief shower on a day hike is one problem. Wind-driven rain, a pack sitting on wet ground, or several days of exposure is something else entirely.

At Squatch Survival Gear, we believe preparedness starts with understanding what equipment can actually do. Marketing language should never replace sound judgment, especially when dry clothing, medical supplies, electronics, or sleep systems depend on it.

What does water-resistant mean on a backpack?

Water-resistant generally means a material or finished product can slow water penetration during limited exposure. It does not mean the pack will keep everything dry indefinitely, and it should never be interpreted as permission to submerge the pack.

Water repellency is a narrower claim. It describes how water behaves on the surface of a material. Rain may bead up and roll away instead of soaking in immediately.

For example, the manufacturer of CORDURA® Classic Fabric describes the material as offering water repellency and notes that different versions can be finished, coated, or laminated. Those treatments can improve performance, but the fabric is still only one component of a finished backpack.

All Squatch-branded backpacks are water-resistant. Squatch Survival Gear does not currently manufacture a branded waterproof backpack. That language is deliberate because water-repellent fabric does not automatically create a waterproof bag.

What would make a waterproof claim meaningful?

Nothing remains waterproof under unlimited depth, pressure, or exposure time. Every fabric, seam, closure, and finished product has a point at which water will get through or the material will fail. That is why “waterproof” is only meaningful when the manufacturer states the conditions under which the product was tested.

The International Electrotechnical Commission’s IP rating system, for example, measures protection under defined conditions. It is not a universal backpack certification, but it demonstrates the right principle: waterproofing is a tested level of protection, not an absolute promise.

Water pressure also increases with depth. A fabric that handles rain may fail much sooner when submerged because pressure forces water through coatings, laminates, closures, and other weak points. Fabrics can fail faster than the complete structure because they provide such a large surface area for that pressure to work against. A fabric rating is useful, but it does not automatically describe the performance of the finished bag.

Products designed for serious water protection are built differently from conventional sewn backpacks. Many use laminated material joined with ultrasonic-welded seams instead of stitching that punches needle holes through the fabric. They also commonly avoid conventional zippers and use a roll-top opening secured with clips or buckles. Rolling the material several times creates a longer, compressed path that water must travel, while the clips hold the closure securely in place.

That construction generally performs better under water exposure and pressure than ordinary sewn seams and standard zippers. It still has limits. A poorly rolled opening can leak, and even a properly closed roll top may eventually allow water through when held underwater or exposed to enough pressure for long enough. As Sea to Summit explains, waterproof fabric is only one part of the system, and roll-top closures can seep during prolonged or pressurized immersion.

A meaningful waterproof claim should identify whether the fabric or the entire finished product was tested, along with the depth, pressure, exposure time, and test method. If a backpack listing simply says “waterproof” without those conditions, the buyer still does not know what the product can reliably withstand.

Why do seams and zippers matter so much?

A sewing needle makes holes.

That statement is obvious when you build equipment, but it is easy to overlook when evaluating a finished backpack. Every seam joins components and creates a potential path for moisture. Reinforcement stitching, webbing attachment points, pocket construction, hydration openings, and other features can introduce additional penetrations.

Zippers create another challenge. Water can work through the zipper chain, around the slider, at the end stops, or through the seam attaching the zipper to the pack. Even a zipper marketed as water-resistant is not automatically watertight because the surrounding construction still matters.

Squatch-branded backpacks do not use rubberized water-resistant or waterproof zippers. We would rather describe the packs honestly as water-resistant and recommend layered protection than imply that one specialized component would make the complete pack waterproof.

This is also an engineering tradeoff. A conventional zipper provides quick, repeatable access to organized equipment. A roll top can provide better protection from water pressure, but it changes how quickly and conveniently the user can reach the contents. As we explained in Why Every Backpack Is a Series of Compromises, good design is not about pretending tradeoffs do not exist. It is about choosing the right tradeoffs for the job.

Can a durable backpack eventually soak through?

Yes.

A short, heavy downpour may be easier to manage than days of steady rain because prolonged exposure gives water more time to find every opening and vulnerable point.

That lesson comes from field experience, not a laboratory brochure. In our earlier article, 3 Things About Rain Covers, we discussed what military experience taught us about continuous rain: enough water over enough time can work through conventional pack materials, seams, and zippers. A couple of days of continuous rain can soak through just about anything.

This article updates that discussion by defining the terminology more precisely. The point is not that conventional backpacks are poorly made. A durable sewn backpack and a waterproof roll-top bag are designed to solve different problems.

Abrasion resistance, load carriage, pocket access, field repairability, ventilation, organization, and water protection all influence the final design. Maximizing one characteristic usually introduces a compromise somewhere else.

Does a rain cover make a backpack waterproof?

No. A rain cover adds useful protection, but it does not convert a conventional backpack into a sealed container.

A properly fitted cover can reduce the amount of rain directly striking the pack body, pockets, and exposed zippers. It can also help keep mud, wet vegetation, snow, and blowing debris off the pack.

However, the harness side generally remains open so the pack can still be worn. Wind can move the cover, water can run between the cover and pack, and moisture can enter through uncovered areas. A rain cover should be viewed as one layer in a water-management system.

What is the best way to keep important gear dry?

Think in layers instead of depending on a single label.

The backpack provides the first layer. Its water-resistant material, finish, and construction slow water entry while carrying and organizing the load.

A rain cover provides another layer during prolonged rain, snow, wet brush, or blowing debris.

Inside the pack, a properly sized waterproof liner or individual roll-top dry bags can protect the items with the highest consequences if they become wet. Sleep systems, insulating clothing, documents, electronics, fire-starting supplies, and moisture-sensitive medical items deserve protection appropriate to the trip.

Squatch sells a third-party Roll Top Dry Bag for protecting and organizing equipment inside a larger pack. It uses a roll-top closure and taped seams, and its product page lists a 5,000 mm hydrostatic-head fabric rating. That rating describes water resistance under a defined fabric test; it should not be interpreted as protection under unlimited depth, pressure, or immersion.

The exact system should match the conditions. A commuter crossing a parking lot in a thunderstorm does not need the same setup as someone spending several days away from shelter.

Preparedness is not about carrying every possible piece of equipment. It is about recognizing the problem, understanding the limits of your tools, and building enough redundancy for the consequences.

How should you evaluate a backpack’s water protection?

Start with the finished product, not just the fabric name.

Ask what material is used and whether it has a water-resistant finish, coating, or laminate. Look at how the seams and attachment points are constructed. Determine what type of closures are used and how water might reach them. Check whether the pack includes a rain cover, provides a dedicated cover pocket, or requires a separate cover.

Most importantly, look for the conditions behind any waterproof claim. Was only the fabric tested, or was the complete finished product tested? Was the test intended to represent a short rain shower, sustained water pressure, or temporary immersion?

If those answers are missing, plan conservatively.

We build gear in the United States, and manufacturing gives us a close view of how materials, stitching, hardware, and design decisions work together. It also makes us skeptical of claims that reduce an entire piece of equipment to one marketing word.

Our goal is not to convince people that one backpack can solve every problem. It is to build durable equipment for clearly understood purposes and help customers use that equipment responsibly.

A well-built water-resistant backpack can be the right tool for daily travel, field work, preparedness, or extended outdoor use. Pairing it with a fitted rain cover and protected internal storage creates a more capable water-management system.

Just do not confuse a system designed to manage rain with a sealed product designed for immersion.

Know what your equipment is built to do. Protect the items that cannot afford to get wet. Then practice using the complete system before the weather makes the decision for you.
